“Our goal is to provide show dog and grooming professionals and pet parents with the products they need to help their pets lead a long, healthy and happy life,” said Roy Loomis, president and CEO of Cherrybrook. “Wholistic Pet Organics’ line of supplements fits perfectly with our company’s mission. We look forward to bringing these great products to our customers throughout the world.”

Over the past few years Cherrybrook has placed a major focus on expanding their health and wellness product offerings. According to Roy Loomis, the company is carrying an increasing variety of all-natural products that are truly beneficial to a pet’s health. “Wholistic Pet Organics are extremely rich in nutrients. They do not contain any fillers, chemicals or additives, making them not only very healthy but also very cost effective,” he said. “These products maintain the highest standard of quality we have seen and have a clear purpose—to keep pets healthy.”

Wholistic Pet Organics was founded over 12 years ago by Jack and Sandy Phillips. Both Jack and Sandy are avid animal lovers and breeders. They were concerned by the health problems that plagued domesticated pets. They realized that conditions such as hip dysplasia, cancer, and skin disorders are all too common. In order to combat these problems, they began to formulate their own organic supplements. The Philips’ began manufacturing and selling their products at dog shows. The company rapidly grew to where it is today---now partnering with Cherrybrook, one of the most well-respected professional pet supply distributors.

According to Phillips, he chooses his partners very carefully. “Many companies want to carry our products,” he said. “But we want to make sure we align ourselves with companies who have a passion for keeping pets healthy. Cherrybrook’s unique position as the industry leader in show dog supplies makes them an exceptional partner for Wholistic Pet Organics.”

Cherrybrook will offer Wholistic Pet Organics at over 200 AKC Dog Shows throughout the Northeast United States and the West Coast. The full product line will also be available to customers throughout the world from their website at www.cherrybrook.com.

From the Internet to a walk-in site: Bedford’s newest store

The sign on Route 101 announces the site of The Wholistic Pet.

After years of Internet-based sales, Jack and Sandy Phillips have opened a walk-in location where pet lovers can buy all-natural, organic and holistic dog, cat, bird and equine pet food and supplements.

Their products are for everyone who has pets and want them to live long and happy lives, Sandy Phillips said.

The Wholistic Pet has been at 341 Route 101 since October but its owners weren’t ready to open the doors to the public until several weeks ago. This location is also the new Internet headquarters, which was previously based out of Manchester.

As Bedford residents for 27 years, the Phillips’ wanted to open a store to the public, Jack Phillips said.

“It is a perfect place to do business along busy Route 101,” he said.

The Wholistic Pet was developed 10 years ago when the couple decided to be more proactive about their dogs’ declining health. Some contributing factors to this problem were the poor quality and chemicals in pet food as well as over-vaccination, Sandy Phillips said.

The Phillips’ have been showing dogs for 30 years and now they sponsor six dogs shows each year.

“Dogs are very close to our hearts,” Sandy Phillips said. “We want them to live forever and not be sickly.”

They started The Wholistic Pet in 1998 and ever since have been dedicated to eradicating avoidable health problems for pets by way of good nutrition. Originally they sold their products in dog shows worldwide. Their products can also be found in pet stores around the country.

The Phillips’ believe organic and holistic products cost consumers less in the long run because owners aren’t bringing their pets to the veterinarian every week.

“The long-term benefits are so superior,” Sandy Phillips said.

A typical one-pound supplement bag for dogs and cats is $24.95. For a small dog a one-pound bag can last up to one year, Sandy Phillips said. A one-pound supplement could sustain an average 50-pound dog for several months.

“Organic is not more expensive,” Jack Phillips said. “It’s actually less expensive. The product is more potent, pure and there is better absorption for animals.”

These supplements, which are sprinkled onto the food, are an addition to a pet’s daily meals. They can also be added to any type of food. Their products are created to add valuable nutrients pets need on a daily basis in their diet, Sandy Phillips said.

The Phillips’ do not believe the slumping economy will have an effect on people’s ability to pay for organic pet foods.

“Either you believe in it or you don’t,” she said. “You’re not going to want to give your dog growth hormones or genetically modified foods.”

Sandy and Jack have gone the holistic route and are sold on their untraditional methods. They feed their dogs certified organic foods, eliminated harmful chemicals in their environment and stopped over-vaccinating them.

“The holistic approach with animals is similar to children,” Sandy Phillips said. “We make decisions that are the best for pets. Pets are family members.”

The Wholistic Pet plans to create an exclusive dog and cat food line, she said, and hopes to have the store fully stocked by this summer.

Feeding Fido, Fifi goes to new level.

A natural: Concern for their pets prompted a NH couple to start Wholistic Pet, which sells organic food and supplements.

Bedford---If dogs are supposed to be man’s best friend, why are their owners feeding them food that humans would never dream of eating?

This question plagued John Phillips, who decided that pets deserve the same quality food and nutrition as their owners.
John and Sandy Phillips are the founders of Wholistic Pet, a pet care company that sells food, dietary supplements and supplies that come from certified organic sources and are as high quality, if not better than, the products most humans use themselves.
The Phillipses started the Bedford-based company in 1998, after realizing that their own animals weren’t living their best possible lives.
“Our animals weren’t in top condition,” John Phillips said. “There were always problems or illnesses.”
Phillips and his wife, who have been involved in dog shows for 30 years and have backgrounds in nutrition, biology and chemistry, started thinking about the commercial products they were using for their animals. The foods were made from by products of the meat industry—parts of other animals and fish that humans would never consider eating themselves—and the vitamins and minerals used to enrich the food came from synthetic sources.
Even the shampoos and other hygiene products were laced with chemicals, Phillips said.
“We decided that our animals should be fed as well as we are,” he said, and together, he and Sandy launched a line of high-quality pet care products using the best organic ingredients available.
Whole grains, lean meats, organic fruits and vegetables, even a bit of kelp are used to make food for dogs, cats, horses and birds. Wholistic Pet offers chemical-free shampoos and flea and tick control products, as well as several lines of dietary supplements meant to bring out the best in animals.
Just as people take vitamins to supplement their diets, Phillips said animals-especially those that are fed commercial foods that contain the bare minimum of essential vitamins and minerals-need additional sources of nutrition.
With ingredients like Cape Cod cranberries, salmon oil, and garlic from organic farms in California, Phillips said the supplements help animals retain their health and vigor for far longer than those that are fed just the basic nutrition available through food.
“The quality of life of our animals is very important,” Phillips said. “Our animals can’t tell us what they need, so we need to make sure they have what they need to be healthy.”
Wholistic Pet sells its products in stores across the country and online at www.wholisticpet.com. By the end of the year, the Phillipses will open their first retail Wholistic Pet store on Rt 101 in Bedford.
“We’re really proud of our products,” said Phillips. “The best food for animals in the world should come out of the U.S.”

Supermarket shelves are lined with nutritional supplements for humans. Television and print advertisements for dietary additives are endless. But, have you ever considered that your pets may be lacking important nutrients in their diet as well? Sandy and Jack Phillips have. The duo specialize in formulating and manufacturing the highest quality, organic, human-grade nutritional supplements for pets of all kinds, from best of breed to the home-loved. Having experienced the highs and lows of pet ownership themselves, they knew only too well that the life span of most pets is far too short and set out to improve pets¹ health and longevity through nutrition. Situated near the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where serenity and purity of nature is a daily experience, it was only natural that the idea for the Wholistic Pet would evolve. In 1998, the first Wholistic Pet catalog was printed and distributed. The Phillips shared a desire to keep the most dependent and devoted family members, their pets, healthy. "We never could have imagined that the love of our dogs, horses, cats and all animals would eventually lead us to form a company based on animal nutrition, but we were very disenchanted by what we saw happening in the pet food industry," the Phillips comment. "Our focus naturally turned towards nutrition and all the health problems associated with an inferior diet. We feel strongly that our animals have suffered from the propaganda and mass merchandising concerning animal nutrition. In addition, the chemical bombardment of our food, water, atmosphere and ecosystem has placed a tremendous burden on our pets¹ declining health," Sandy adds.

Because of the observations made about their own pets, Sandy and Jack have become strong supporters of a holistic nutritional approach to a pet¹s health care. They promote education and awareness of alternative care choices. The Phillips believe pet owners can and will make better choices for the good of their pet once they are informed on how to do so. The Wholistic Pet does not imply that traditional veterinary care is unimportant; it merely suggests that a more balanced approach to an animal's health will improve its quality of life and life span. By adhering to the philosophy that "a holistic pet is happy and healthy," the Wholistic Pet is achieving their mission to eradicate all avoidable pet health problems.

Both Sandy and Jack have concentrated their efforts on formulating nutritional supplements that will meet and exceed the nutritional needs of show and companion pets. Jack earned a Bachelor of science in Chemistry and Biochemistry, and a Juris Doctorate degree in law, and continues his studies in organic chemistry and animal nutrition while currently earning his doctorate degree in Naturopathy. Sandy earned an Associates degree in Animal Science at the State University of New York at Delhi, a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, a Masters of Education in Science and also continues her studies in animal nutrition and animal behavior. "Our best selling Wholistic Canine Complete and Wholistic Canine Complete Joint Mobility, along with Wholistic Equine Complete and Wholistic Equine Complete Joint Mobility, represent what we believe to be the highest form of complete, all-natural nutritional supplementation. Both formulas offer a comprehensive all-in-one raw whole-food source of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, digestive enzymes, probiotics, and antioxidants," says Sandy. Ingredients used for manufacturing the Wholistic Pet line products are gathered from a variety of sources. For example, the certified organic garlic used in a variety of Wholistic Pet products is bought from a California Certified Organic Farmer that exclusively grows garlic that will ensure the highest quality product possible. The kelp used in products like the Wholistic Sea Blend TM pure, certified organic kelp for horses is not only the highest quality kelp available, providing a rich source of concentrated minerals, but is labeled as a certified organic product because of its origin and because it is harvested and prepared using an ecologically-friendly method.

Wholistic Equine Bee Pollen is a rich source of non-irradiated, non-imported, human-grade bee pollen collected from lush fields of wild flowers grown in the United States. Wholistic Run-Free and the Joint Mobility Formula use nutraceuticals that are strictly pharmaceutical grade and USP standardized for purity, potency and efficacy. In addition, The Wholistic Pet line of products always uses human-grade whole-food ingredients and/or certified organic ingredients. Sandy is careful to note that she and Jack are not veterinarians and do not, in any way, intend to diagnose or treat any pets. Rather, they offer only choices and, hopefully, enough knowledge so that each pet owner can be better informed. They note that just as parents are to children, pet owners are the best advocate for their pet. Any actions taken must always make sense to the pet owner and, most importantly, be right for their pet. In addition to offering nutritional supplements, The Wholistic Pet also offers horse owners natural remedies for parasite control, flea and pest control, pain management, and a newly introduced line of organic shampoos. Plus, the Wholistic Equine Super Omega line offers homeopathic remedies for deworming, coat enhancement and hoof enhancement, among others. "[Our] catalog is the embodiment of our search to find healthy, holistic products for our companion animals. We believe that there will continue to be a movement away from chemical-laden, inferior-quality pet products to healthy, all natural alternatives. Our animals depend totally and completely on us; they deserve the very best that we can give," conclude the Phillips.

COPY OF Pet Food Buyer, Beware!

By now, most pet owners have heard of the Menu pet food recall that affected hundreds of pet food brands and caused the deaths of pets throughout the country. The exact number of pets who died as a direct result of eating these contaminated foods is debatable. The Menu foods recall was, simply put, a tragedy. Many unsuspecting pet owners literally killed their pets by feeding them! The aftermath of losing one's beloved pet was even more profound to those owners because they felt that they had caused their own pet's death.

However, is there a bigger message in this tragedy? Is there anything positive that can be gleaned from this horrible happening? At The Wholistic Pet®, we believe that the answer is a resounding "YES!"

If the recall had never happened, then most of us would still be unaware of some of the ingredients that traditionally comprise pet food. Why would we question the ingredients that go into making food that we so trustingly pour into our pet's food bowl at every feeding? After all, isn't it the best that we can be feeding our pets? Unfortunately, the answer is not always "yes."

Just as the food we eat varies between brands, the same holds true for pet food companies that utilize varying qualities of food and ingredients. The truth of the matter is that cost is a factor when it comes to buying the food that we eat and it becomes a major factor when buying food that our pets eat. In addition, pet food companies need to balance what is an adequately nutritious diet for pets with what consumers are willing to pay to feed their pets and what profits the company must realize.

A general rule of thumb when purchasing your pet's food is "if you can't recognize an ingredient, don't buy it." The exception would be vitamins whose scientific names can sound bewildering. For instance, Vitamin E is known as alpha-tocopherol and Vitamin C is known as calcium ascorbate. According to AAFCO, the regulatory body for all animal feed, vitamins must be listed on the label in their scientific names. However, these are usually found at the very end of the ingredient list because it is the relatively smallest amount added to any diet. On the other hand, if the label you are reading contains artificial ingredients, artificial preservatives or chemical names, it most likely is not what you have in mind when buying food that is meant to nourish your pet.

Everyone has heard of the old adage "Buyer, beware!" and that certainly applies to pet food. It really is a matter of pet owners becoming more educated and questioning what really is in that bag of pet food. After all, most of us would not even remotely consider feeding a food to our family that is mashed into an indistinguishable mass, heated to exceedingly high temperatures, pressed into hard little nuggets, spray-dried with an irresistible taste meant to encourage eating and then packaged into a bag with a one-year expiration date!

Just because a package -- with a photo of a healthy appearing pet -- is labeled as dog food, or cat food, or any other pet food fare, don't assume that it is necessarily the best for your pet! However, the good news is that as more and more pet owners question what they are feeding their pets, more and more conscientious pet food manufacturers are beginning to respond by using more natural, higher quality ingredients in their formulas. It is a start, and it is very good news for all pet owners!
